Adult literacy teachers cover reading, writing, arithmetic and speaking English
Outlook: Employment of adult literacy teachers is expected to increase 15 percent over the 2008-18 decade, faster than the average for all occupations.
Pay: The 1,770 adult literacy teachers in the Seattle-Bellevue-Tacoma area earned a median wage of $42,240 in 2008.
The job: These professionals teach adults and out-of-school youths reading, writing, speaking English and math. Some help prepare students to earn General Education Development (GED) credentials. They also help students find additional resources in the community, such as health care, job placement or other educational opportunities. The adults they teach are typically in class voluntarily and are motivated to learn, so adult literacy teachers don’t encounter some of the behavioral problems of younger students. Evening and weekend work is common to accommodate students who have job or family responsibilities.
Training/licensing: A bachelor’s degree is required, but some positions require a master’s degree in adult education or English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL).
