What do you do? Public-relations professional by day, charity/benefit auctioneer for nonprofits by nights and weekends. I do events throughout the Northwest, around the country and in Canada.

How did you get started? When I couldn’t attend our son’s open house at Somerset Elementary (Bellevue) 20 years ago, my wife “volunteered” me to be the emcee of the school’s upcoming auction.

What’s a typical day like? I work closely with organizations throughout the year, leading up to their auction, helping them shape their event to increase revenue, increase the overall participation opportunities for the attendees and to make sure the evening is fun for everyone involved.

What’s the best part of the job? The best part is learning about some of the terrific lower-profile nonprofits that have an incredible impact on people in their communities. There are fabulous people who dedicate their lives to helping others. It’s great being able to use my skills and expertise to help them make an even bigger difference.

What surprises people about your work? They’re surprised to learn that I don’t speak fast. I’m not an automobile, estate or cattle auctioneer. Rather than selling things, I’m encouraging people to donate to the cause and get a fabulous item in return.

They’re also surprised to learn the highest bid I’ve received for a single item was $31,000 for an elementary school classroom project several years ago. Two parents got into a bidding war for a mobile art project that cost roughly $25 to make.
