Barbers and cosmetologists make clients beautiful from head to toe
Outlook: Employment of barbers and cosmetologists is expected to increase 20 percent over the 2008-18 decade, much faster than the average for all occupations.
Pay: The 6,300 barbers and cosmetologists in the Seattle-Bellevue-Tacoma area earned a median wage of $27,090 in 2008.
The job: These professionals cut, style and color hair and provide skin care and nail treatments. They work in clean, pleasant surroundings. They must be fit enough to be on their feet for the workday and have excellent interpersonal skills.
Training/licensing: Graduation from a state-approved barber or cosmetology school prepares workers for the state test required for licensing.
