Bricklayer

Pay: Bricklayers in the Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue area earned an average $29.80 an hour or $61,980 a year, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The middle 50 percent earned between $55,890 and $68,020.

Demand: Job opportunities are expected to be very good through 2016, though building jobs are sensitive to changes in the economy.

The Job: Bricklayers, also called brickmasons, build and repair walls, floors, partitions, fireplaces, chimneys and other structures with brick, precast masonry panels, concrete block and other masonry materials. They must stand, kneel and bend for long periods and often have to lift heavy materials. They usually work outdoors, and sometimes at great heights. Bad weather can stop work, but new processes and materials are allowing masons to work in a greater variety of weather conditions.

Training: Many bricklayers learned their trade on the job, starting as helpers. Many others undertake apprenticeships involving both classroom and on-the-job training. Industry-based programs usually last 2-4 years. Most programs require a high-school diploma or equivalent. More information about apprenticeships is at www.wabuildingtrades.org.

Swede on the move to the states. Fully trained bricklayer with 7 years background as a bricklayer. Would like some information on how to become a legal working immigrant in the U.S. Please give me some advise.
