What do you do? I'm the national bridal director for Nordstrom. I select dresses for our 18 Wedding Suites around the country and NordstromWeddings.com and work with our store and online teams to try to make sure brides have a great experience shopping for their wedding gowns, bridesmaids dresses, grooms' attire, shoes and accessories.
What's a typical day like? Lots of communicating! I have many different partners -- we have wedding stylists in all of our wedding suites around the country. Their job is to help brides coordinate their perfect wedding style. My job is to make sure they have the tools and knowledge to bring the latest bridal fashions to their customers. I also spend a lot of time communicating with all of our designers who sell us their dresses. We're constantly talking about our customer and the best way to reach her, pick out dresses for her and serve her.
How does someone get a job like yours? The advice I always provide is to do the best possible job in your current position. That's what will open up doors to your next opportunity -- one you may not even be able to predict! The best place to start to get many jobs at Nordstrom is as a salesperson in one of our stores.
What's the best part of the job? Knowing that my team and I can help bring fashion to the bride -- from her engagement party all the way to her honeymoon! We can even hook her up with a make-up artist for the big day. I get to work with so many different people and on so many different projects to try to make that happen, which I also love.
What surprises people about your job? First, that it's not just going to fashion shows and picking out pretty dresses. That's definitely an important and fun part of it, but I actually spend more of my time managing the day-to-day and planning for the future. Second, that I really enjoy getting to know our brides! Sometimes brides get a bad rap on TV, but the ones I meet in our Wedding Suites are delightful as they're looking for the gowns of their dreams.
