Outlook: Employment of audiologists is expected to increase 25 percent over the 2008-18 decade, much faster than the average for all occupations.
Pay: The 220 audiologists in the Seattle-Bellevue-Tacoma area earned a median wage of $62,150 in 2008.
The job: Audiologists use testing devices to assess hearing, balance and related ear problems. They can fit hearing aids and cochlear implants, offer counseling on adjusting to hearing loss and teach communication strategies. About 64 percent of audiologists work in health care facilities and many others work in educational services.
Training/licensing: master’s degree in audiology is required, but a doctoral degree is increasingly necessary. All states require the professionals to be licensed.
