Demand increases for correctional officers, who learn largely on the job
Outlook: Employment of correctional officers is expected to increase 16 percent over the 2006-16 decade, which is faster than the average for all occupations.
Pay: Correctional officers and jailers in the Seattle-Bellevue-Tacoma area earned a median wage of $54,580 in 2008.
The job: Correctional officers are responsible for overseeing individuals who have been arrested and are awaiting trial or who have been convicted of a crime and sentenced to serve time in a jail, reformatory or penitentiary.
Training/licensing: Correctional officers learn most of what they need to know for their work through on-the-job training. Qualifications vary by agency, but all require at least a high school diploma or equivalent.
