Emergency medical technicians and paramedics are valued first responders
Outlook: Employment of emergency medical technicians and paramedics is expected to increase 18 percent over the 2006-16 decade, which is faster than the average for all occupations.
Pay: The 1,880 emergency medical technicians and paramedics in the Seattle-Bellevue-Tacoma area earned a median wage of $30,150 in 2008.
The job: Emergency medical technicians (EMTs) and paramedics are typically dispatched by 911 operators to attend to the injured or sick at incidents ranging from heart attacks to automobile accidents.
Training/licensing: A high school diploma is usually required to enter a formal emergency medical technician training program. Training is offered at progressive levels: EMT-Basic, EMT-Intermediate and EMT-Paramedic.
