Emphasize relevant skills for medical admin job
Q: My wife is looking for a medical receptionist position on the Eastside. She has plenty of experience. Any suggestions?
-- G.S., Bellevue
Kristen says: Medicine is one of the top industries in the Seattle area. Overlake Hospital Medical Center, Group Health and Evergreen Hospital Medical Center are well-established hospitals; I also would suggest checking out the new Swedish campus in Issaquah and Seattle Children’s Bellevue Clinic and Surgery Center.
The University of Washington Medical Center has neighborhood clinics in Woodinville, Factoria and Issaquah, and specialty offices near Overlake in Bellevue. If your wife is open to commuting farther south, Valley Medical Center and Providence Health and Services are located in Renton. The best place to search for job openings at these medical centers is the careers pages on their websites.
In addition, there are several clinics and practices for your wife to consider; these tend to be located near the larger medical centers. Most of the hospitals should have a list of affiliated physicians/specialties on their websites. These smaller offices generally use NWjobs.com, Craigslist or WorkSource to advertise their job openings.
Another option would be to sign up with a temporary staffing firm that specializes in administrative jobs, such as Kelly Services, OfficeTeam or AppleOne. Dental Connections, a staffing agency based in Federal Way, places temporary and full-time workers in the dental field. If your wife is open to alternative medicine, Bastyr Center for Natural Health’s website lists naturopathic clinics and physicians’ offices in the area.
Highly relevant skills are what set a candidate apart from the rest. Your wife should list all relevant experience on her résumé, such as ICD code knowledge and working with HIPAA compliance issues, and indicate the size of the organizations she has worked for. Did she work in a hospital? Small independent practice? Busy clinic with multiple physicians? Specialty environment (e.g., oncology or pediatric)? How many phone lines did she answer? What kind of calendar management system did she use? Knowledge of industry tools, such as Lawson or Epic software, also is valuable.
It’s all about making sure that your wife’s experience dovetails with the keywords and type of setting for potential employers. The more closely she can align her experience with theirs, the greater her chances will be for landing the job that is right for her.
