Hot job: Interior designers
Kenna Stout of Brio Interior Design says it’s incredible to have a career that she is passionate about that also challenges her on a daily basis. (Jess Wamre)
The job: Interior designers plan, design and furnish interiors of residential, commercial or industrial buildings. They create designs that are practical, aesthetic and conducive to intended purposes, such as raising productivity, selling merchandise or improving lifestyle.
A Seattleite at work: Kenna Stout (pictured) of Brio Interior Design says designing an interior is equally a creative and technical process. “I enjoy my job because I am challenged on a daily basis to be creative, analytical and diplomatic,” Stout says.
Outlook: Employment of interior designers is expected to grow 19 percent from 2008 to 2018, faster than the average for all occupations.
Pay: The 680 interior designers in the Seattle-Bellevue-Tacoma area earned a median wage of $53,320 in 2009.
Training: After completion of a certificate or associate or bachelor’s degree, interior designers usually serve as apprentices for one to three years. Some states require interior designers to be licensed or registered, but Washington is not among them.
“Getting involved with a professional organization like the Northwest Society of Interior Designers, IIDA or ASID to network with other interior designers and related professionals will help you in your job search once you finish your degree, and to stay educated and connected throughout your career,” Stout says.

The correct link to NWSID Puget Sound Chapter should be: www.nwsid.net
The link, in the article, above, sends one to our Portland Chapter - which is fine, except the article is based in Seattle. We've been dealing with this confusion for quite some time! Thanks!
