Many employers don't distill time off as 'sick' and 'vacation' anymore-why bother with the overhead of keeping track of two types of down time? It certainly is not my employer's business if I am sick or merely catching up on Dr. Who episodes. I have a bucket of PTO time-what I do with it, within certain restrictions for departmental needs, is mine to determine.

I can see the need, certainly. But it's not a nice thing to do to your coworkers and others if, for example, you're a low level health care worker in a nursing home. Whenever somebody calls in 'sick' that person has to be replaced, and that isn't always possible.

Lack of staffing on your employers part is not your responsibility or concern when using your earned benefits. If your employer isn't willing or able to prepare accordingly, why would they offer the benefits to begin with?

If you truly do not want to be at work, why make your co-workers miserable with your poor attitude. A mental health day to get your attitude up can be real worthwhile. Just don't do it to catch up on your favorite TV show. Do it to turn that attitude around.
