Jobs in Demand: boilermaker
Outlook: Employment of boilermakers is expected to increase 19 percent over the 2008-18 decade, faster than the average for all occupations.
Pay: The 160 boilermakers in the Seattle-Bellevue-Tacoma area earned a median wage of $45,300 in 2009.
The job: These professionals make, install and repair boilers, closed vats and other large vessels or containers that hold liquids and gases. They also install and repair air-pollution equipment, blast furnaces, water-treatment plants, storage and process tanks, and smoke stacks. Some install and maintain huge pipes used in dams. The physically demanding work also has hazards, such as acetylene torches, power grinders and heavy parts and tools. Many boilermakers must travel to a project and live away from home for long periods of time.
Training: Apprenticeship programs prepare workers for the field. Those with welder training get priority in selection to the programs.
