Jobs in Demand: computer software engineer
Outlook: Employment of computer software engineers is expected to increase 21 percent over the 2008-18 decade, much faster than the average for all occupations.
Pay: The 22,170 computer software engineers in the Seattle-Bellevue-Tacoma area earned a median wage of $88,930 in 2008.
The job: These professionals design and develop software such as computer games, business applications, operating systems and network-control systems. There are generally two categories of computer software engineers: applications engineers, who design, construct and maintain general computer applications software; and systems engineers, who coordinate the construction, maintenance and expansion of an organization’s computer systems.
Training: A bachelor’s degree is commonly required, although a master’s degree is preferred for some positions.
