Jobs in Demand: dental hygienist
Outlook: Employment of dental hygienists is expected to increase 36 percent over the 2008-18 decade, much faster than the average for all occupations.
Pay: The 2,510 dental hygienists in the Seattle-Bellevue-Tacoma area earned a median wage of $94,500 in 2009.
The job: These professionals remove deposits from teeth, teach patients good oral hygiene and provide other preventative dental care. They may also apply cavity-preventative agents such as fluorides and sealants. About half work part-time.
Training: A degree from an accredited dental hygiene school and a state license are required.
