Jobs in Demand: dental laboratory technician

Outlook: Employment of dental laboratory technicians is expected to increase 14 percent over the 2008-18 decade, faster than the average for all occupations.

Pay: The 580 dental laboratory technicians in the Seattle-Bellevue-Tacoma area earned a median wage of $37,660 in 2008.

The job: Dental laboratory technicians fill prescriptions from dentists for crowns, bridges, dentures and other dental prosthetics. They build and shape a wax tooth or teeth model and then pour the cast and form the metal and prepare the surface to allow the metal and porcelain to bond. They then apply porcelain in layers to mimic the precise shape and color of a tooth.

Training: On-the-job training of those with at least a high school diploma is standard, but colleges are starting to offer training in dental laboratory technology.
