What do you do? I am the community manager for [Renton-based] Wizards of the Coast’s newest brand, Kaijudo, a collectible card game and television series. I manage the brand’s Facebook page and other social-media accounts and keep my ear to the ground, listening to what fans have to say about the game.
How does someone else get a job like yours? I have a background in social media marketing, but I think it certainly helps to know the market. I play games with friends, volunteer with GeekGirlCon and explore lots and lots of social networks. Plus, it’s essential to have a sense of humor. You can’t work with games without being able to have fun.
What’s a typical day like? I create a calendar for updates to post during the week and then go through the various network pages looking for comments and updates and provide feedback to the Kaijudo team as needed. I also spend a lot of time working with my team on new ways to increase engagement and excite our fans both on and offline.
What’s the best part of the job? There isn’t a person here who doesn’t love working with the Wizards brands, and that makes for a great energy in the building. Also I love seeing the excitement of our fans every day and knowing that I can act as their voice within the company.
What surprises people about the job? People are surprised and a little jealous of the fact that I get to play games, hang out and work with the people who make those games, and find new ways to excite people using social networking. Plus, there’s that dragon in the lobby!
