Margit Crane

Margit Crane; Teen, Tween and Parenting Coach

Now: Teen, Tween and Parenting Coach

Then: Bar/Bat Mitzvah Tutor

Current Position: I am the founder of TheGiftedTeenCoach.com. I help families with gifted teens (often diagnosed with ADD/ADHD) release anxiety, frustration and confusion so they can enjoy better communication, greater self-confidence, more moments of success, and a whole lot more fun in their relationships with family and friends.

First Job: The cantor of my synagogue, Sinai Temple in Los Angeles, hired me to help the students (12- and 13-year-olds) to learn the Torah portions they would chant on their big day. I already knew Hebrew, but all the words to be chanted have little "squiggles" and each squiggle has a two- to five-note melody, so I had to memorize all the squiggles and melodies and then teach it to fellow teenagers. I felt so honored!

Pay: What was minimum wage in 1972?

How I got the job: When the new cantor was hired, the former cantor apparently told him to find something for me to do. He started to groom me to become a cantor and this (and a solo every Friday night) was the first step. (I didn't pursue my cantorial training past age 16.)

What I learned: I learned that teens thrive when offered genuine kindness, respect and encouragement. Teens are always having to jump through hoops for their parents and teachers. What a difference when someone else is willing to do the hoop-jumping instead! ("I want to help you just because you're you" is a big rush for a teen.)
