Meeting and convention planners coordinate events down to the last detail

Outlook: Employment of meeting and convention planners is expected to increase 16 percent over the 2008-18 decade, faster than the average for all occupations.

Pay: The 780 meeting and convention planners in the Seattle-Bellevue-Tacoma area earned a median wage of $44,170 in 2008.

The job: Meeting and convention planners coordinate every detail of the events on which they are working, from the speakers and meeting location to arranging for printed materials and audio-visual equipment. Planners also arrange support services and negotiate contracts with facilities and suppliers.

Training/licensing: The proportion of meeting and convention planners with a bachelor's degree is increasing because the work and responsibilities are becoming more complex. Others enter the profession by gaining planning experience while working in another position, such as administrative assistant.
