My First Job: Bill Hurlbert, regional business banking manager
|
Current position: Regional Business Banking manager for Wells Fargo in Washington. Hurlbert directs more than 140 Wells Fargo Business Banking team members and oversees operations for 11 Business Banking centers throughout the state.
First job: I grew up on my grandfather's grain farm in Montana. Regardless of my age, I had chores, but my first "real" paying job came when I was 10. The farm was about 50 miles from the nearest town, and it was difficult to get workers for the farm; so my grandfather hired me to drive a two-ton grain truck during harvest. My truck would drive along side a combine, a machine that harvests grain, while it unloaded grain into my truck. I would have to constantly watch my speed and distance from the combine, knowing as I did that any spilled grain was not a good thing. I made my share of mistakes é several times I spilled and one time I drove into the combine causing a bit of damage. My grandfather never yelled, though; he was very patient with me. It took two or three days to get the hang of it.
How I got the job: The hired man I replaced never came back from a night on the town.
What I learned: I didn't realize it then, but this job and many others on the farm taught me a great work ethic. I learned not to shy away from new challenges, that it's all right to make mistakes if you learn from them, and that patience in teaching, mentoring and coaching is essential.
