My First Job: Christie S. Mueller, insurance-company owner
|
Current position: Owner, Mueller and Associates, a provider of insurance and financial services affiliated with New York Life.
First job: Purse and hosiery salesperson and cashier for Kinney Shoes in La Mirada, Calif., in 1967.
How I got the job: It was a cold call at age 16. I walked in, heart in my throat, and asked if they had a position available. They had me come back for several interviews. By the time they finally hired me, I had experienced the emotional highs and lows of job hunting.
What I learned: I learned that connecting with the public gave me energy. I learned that looking someone in the eye and being honest is valued by everyone. I learned that working was a choice that enhanced my life and self esteem. Finally, I learned the value of laser-beam focus -- which was a great skill to develop as a 16-year-old. This attribute has supported my career and life success at every step along my journey.
