My First Job: Dave Turnbull, CEO CollegeGear.com
|
Current position: CEO, CollegeGear.com
First job: Dishwasher. Also known as the exfoliator of cemented-on mashed potatoes and turkey remover from pots and pans at O'Brien's Turkey Manor restaurant (now a Chinese restaurant) in Bellevue, age 15.
Pay: $3.50 per hour in 1986, and I was actually excited at the time. I was going places and with this type of cash.
How I got the job: Applied as a young, aspiring, motivated worker ready to get a fresh taste of the working world only to be soured by a mountain-high stack of dishes and pans with cemented-on potatoes, gravy and cranberry sauce.
What I learned: Working for someone else sucks. I absolutely knew then that I was going to quit and I better start thinking about how I could make money on my own. There was no way on God's green earth I was going to end up in a cubicle attending to my managers, asking me if I had received the memo about putting cover sheets on all reports. Opportunity is out there for anyone, and I thank the stars for all the lazy people who don't utilize this.
