My First Job: David Falls, lead release technician

David Falls

Current position: Lead release technician, Microsoft, where he ensures that software leaving the company meets certain standards.

First job: Rocco's Produce in Fairbanks, Alaska. I was primarily responsible for unloading semi-trailers filled with produce from Seattle. The trailers arrived during the "off" hours, which meant very early mornings. Typically, there were four to five of us on hand to unload the truck. I also cleaned the storage areas and assisted with the delivery of produce to local grocery stores.

How I got the job: My brother lived in Fairbanks and knew that this company was looking for help. So at age 15, I decided to fly up to Alaska for the summer in hopes of landing the job. Before hiring me, the owner wanted proof that I would be able to perform all of the duties. He decided a good test would be to "toss" me a 50-pound sack of potatoes, just to see if I was able to handle it. Fortunately, I didn't drop it.

What I learned: The value of work ethic and teamwork. Unloading a large semi-trailer filled with produce was difficult and at times it seemed overwhelming. I learned that through good old-fashioned hard work even the most daunting task can be achieved. I also came to realize the importance of being part of a group working together in order to meet a specific goal. These virtues have stayed with me during my 18-plus years at Microsoft.
