My First Job: Ellen Garcia, executive director

Current position: Executive director, Providence ElderPlace Seattle.
First job: High-school fashion board that coordinated fashion shows and promotional events and did outreach to teens for a department store in Hawaii.
How I got the job: I competed with over 200 applicants on Oahu to obtain a slot on this 12-member board. A retail store was looking for student leaders representing a variety of high schools and diverse ethnic backgrounds
What I learned: The importance of discovering the special qualities each person brings to work and creatively tapping into those gifts. I learned that a caring presence brings out the beauty in others.
