My First Job: Jen Doak, co-founder and general manager

Current position: Co-founder and general manager of The Tasting Room in Seattle a winery cooperative specializing in artisan and limited-production wines.
First job: Working the peanut and candy counter at Sears & Roebuck in Renton for about $5 an hour.
What I learned: That chocolate-covered malt balls were my favorite and that Harold, my 80-year-old regular customer, would flirt with me to get a better deal on his cashews. Flattery gets you everywhere. I often manned the counter solo, so I recall learning how to be efficient and let my personality shine through. A smile and hard work goes a long, long way.
