My First Job: Karen Stone, instructor in the veterinary-assistant program
|
Current position: Instructor in the veterinary-assistant program at Pima Medical Institute, Seattle. Recent recipient of the Humane Animal Welfare Award from the Washington State Veterinary Medical Association for work advancing animal welfare, which includes spearheading the Feral Cat Spay and Neuter Clinic.
First job: Lifeguard.
Pay: $1.25 an hour.
How I got the job: I volunteered to coach the diving team so I knew the manager at the pool. I had also taken my lifesaving training so I had the necessary qualifications for the job.
What I learned: There are many opportunities in life where you can use your talents and skills. Getting some training in areas that interest you can open doors to interesting jobs and volunteer positions. My latest area of interest is canine massage and rehabilitation, which has gotten me back in the pool only this time I'm working with dogs!
