My First Job: Mark Blosch, senior vice president
|
Current position: Senior vice president, Integra Telecom of Washington.
First job: Bagging groceries, stocking shelves and sweeping floors at a small family-owned neighborhood grocery on the west side of Salt Lake City.
How I got the job: I was 13 and like most kids my age, frequented the store to buy candy, chips and soda. One day, I noticed a "Now Hiring Baggers" sign and inquired. I was told I was too young, but because I looked and acted mature for my age, was encouraged to talk to the owner. The next day, I returned to the store when the owner was in, we talked for 45 minutes and he offered me the position.
What I learned: How to complete assigned tasks, work with fellow employees, manage my time, and overcome challenges. ... I discovered that when it comes to customers, one size doesn't fit all and that you must be flexible and willing to adapt based on needs. Also, I quickly recognized that customers reward outstanding service.
