My First Job: Mike Peringer, director of marketing/sales
|
Current position: Director of Marketing/Sales at Process Heating; also president of the Sodo Business Association.
First job: Working at the Seattle Post-Intelligencer as a newspaper advertising copy/deliveryperson. Made tear sheets of ads, ran ad proofs to advertisers all over the city from downtown to the suburbs. It was an after-school job I got only because I was cut from the Roosevelt High School basketball team. Worked after school and weekends for three years until college.
What I learned: My first boss, a true gentleman named Marty Carson, was the very best. He set standards for all of us that I'll never forget. More important was his ability to somehow emphasize patience. I try to this day to emulate his style, though I don't think I'll ever have the patience he demonstrated daily. He taught us how to get along with people, particularly those who supplied the paper with all-important ads and to simply get along with the least amount of frustration. I'll never forget Marty. In fact, I'm still learning from his leadership 55 years later.
