My First Job: Sandy Campbell, interior designer and owner

Current position: Interior designer and owner of One Earth One Design, a sustainable lifestyle store.
First job: I worked during the summers when I was 11 and 12 for my dad, who was a tile contractor. He would take me on his job sites and I would hand him tile as he laid it. He would give me leftover pieces. Once I took a large piece of cardboard and used the 1x1 tiles he gave me to construct some walls. Then I made a floor plan of the "Brady Bunch" house, and used some Fisher Price people for the family. I also made furniture out of tile, which I would rearrange from time to time. I guess I knew at that age what I wanted to do when I grew up.
What I learned: My dad's craft and how much skill and hard work it took, which gave me a great appreciation for subcontractors. I also learned his work ethic, which was to give every job you take on your best effort. And I like to think I run my company the way he did. He was a very honest and hardworking person who always treated everyone well. I couldn't do better than to emulate my dad.
