My First Job: Suzette McClintock, executive vice president
|
Current position: Executive vice president of Allyis, a technical-consulting and staffing-services company that manages Web and technology personnel. Before this position, had a 15-year career at Microsoft.
First job: In 1984 I was a flag person for road construction partly during my senior year of high school and the summer before I started college at Washington State University.
Pay: $13.35 an hour plus time-and-a-half for overtime and double-time on Sundays.
How I got the job: My uncle's company won the contract to resurface a highway. I had to take and pass a class for the job as well as earn a certificate for CPR and first aid.
What I learned: Even though this was a lot of money for me and especially for my age, I could also see that I was making the same amount as my older co-workers. I felt very lucky to be heading off to college to pursue a career that didn't break my back every day and where my earning potential would increase over time. It was a bit of a shock when I began my career at Microsoft straight out of college and was earning quite a bit less than what that flagging job paid, but after 15 years at Microsoft and now helping run things at Allyis, I'm pretty sure I made the right choice.
