My First Job: Tom Varga

Now: Managing partner
Then: Italian delicatessen counter clerk
Current position: Managing partner for CFO Selections, a finance consulting and recruiting firm
First job: In high school, I worked at an Italian deli. The owner coached me to say the names of the foods with an Italian accent, which wasn't always easy for a kid growing up in Cleveland. He said it was what the customers expected.
What I learned: I learned a lot about customer service, relationships and salesmanship. The owner, even at age 78, donned his apron and helped customers carry bags to their cars.
