My First Job: Tom White, president of Ergo
|
Current position: President of Ergo, a company in Carnation that develops ergonomic bicycle seats, and president and founder of Daedalus, an industrial-design firm.
First job: Lifeguard in Winchester, Va., which led to head lifeguard in colonial Williamsburg and helped pay for college.
Pay: $1 an hour (1952).
What I learned: I've always been interested in human bodies how they work, what their limitations are and how to spot and fix problems before they get out of hand. Being a lifeguard was the best of all worlds, where I could see people who are getting into trouble even before they knew it and help them out.
