My First Job: Vicky Stormo, chief of police, University of Washington Police Department
|
Current position: Chief of police, University of Washington Police Department, which has more than 100 staff members, including 51 commissioned police officers.
First job: Cashier/stocker at Pier One Imports in Albuquerque, N.M.
What I learned: That through hard work, people will recognize you and give your opportunities. I learned how to talk and communicate with people, even when they are rude and obnoxious. I also learned about customer service. This helped me out tremendously in law enforcement. I learned that you can give people a citation or arrest them and if you treat them with dignity and respect, they appreciate it and thank you for doing what you do. There are always exceptions, but you learn to be patient and not take things personally.
