My First Job: Xuyen Nguyen, teen business-development manager
|
First job / current position: Teen business-development manager at YouthForce in Seattle. Our mission is to help low-income and minority teens' reach academic, personal and career goals through individualized goal setting, education and employment coaching, and paid professional internships through partnerships with leading Seattle businesses. My job is to introduce YouthForce's internship program to business leaders, demonstrate the value and abilities of teens, and sell the advantages of YouthForce and an amazing teen to their business.
What I have learned: When I first applied for the position two years ago, I knew that I was interested in business and I had career goals, but never would I have thought that I would be meeting with Peter Rose, CEO of Expeditors International, or Jeffrey Brotman, chairman of Costco, and having these business as well as personal conversations with such prominent people. A few years ago, I never even knew of this world. I could not visualize an executive, a typical office building, or the everyday lives of business leaders, but now I can. I've learned the value of communication in building relationships and how important they are to any business.
