Pest-control workers are licensed to eliminate vermin
Outlook: Employment of pest-control workers is expected to increase 15 percent over the 2008-18 decade, faster than the average for all occupations.
Pay: The 390 pest-control workers in the Seattle-Bellevue-Tacoma area earned a median wage of $37,840 in 2008.
The job: These professionals locate, identify and remove pests such as rats, roaches, ants and termites from homes and businesses. They must travel to sites and be able to kneel, bend and crawl to inspect and treat structures. Though workers are trained and outfitted for protection from pesticides, use of the chemicals still increases the risk of injury on the job.
Training: Most workers need a high school diploma and receive on-the-job training. State law requires them to be licensed.
