Pharmacy technicians count tablets and label bottles, among other duties
Outlook: Employment of pharmacy technicians is expected to increase 25 percent over the 2008-18 decade, much faster than the average for all occupations.
Pay: The 2,860 pharmacy technicians in the Seattle-Bellevue-Tacoma area earned a median wage of $35,800 in 2008.
The job: Pharmacy technicians receive prescription requests, count tablets, label bottles and, in the absence of a pharmacy aide, perform administrative duties such as answer phones, stock shelves and operate cash registers. Work environments include hospitals, nursing homes, retail stores and mail-order facilities. Good customer service skills are needed.
Training/licensing: To be certified in Washington, pharmacy technicians must graduate from a program approved by the Board of Pharmacy.
