Property manager needs tips on finding a job in Seattle before moving here

Q: I have a very strong background in property management. I am looking to relocate to Seattle from Wisconsin. I have already contacted most of the major commercial property management companies in Seattle. My timeframe is flexible, but I wondered if you had any other suggestions?
-LL, Milwaukee

Kristen says: It sounds as if you have already started your search in a logical manner. In addition to contacting the major companies in the area, you might also consider joining BOMA, The Building Owners and Managers Association of Seattle King County. You can also use BOMA as a search term on LinkedIn to connect with a larger network of people as well.

Seattle is a technology-savvy city, and as such, some of the best places to find positions will be on Seattle’s Craigslist and the NWJobs section of The Seattle Times. In addition, I would recommend checking out some of the adjacent areas such as Tacoma and Bellevue, which may or may not be on your radar. Bellevue especially has a high number of commercial properties, including hotels, offices, apartments and condo complexes in the downtown region. There are major office parks in Tukwila, Renton, Kent, Everett, Canyon Park, Lynnwood and the SoDo area. Check out Office Space’s detailed listings, broken down by space usage.

Since you have time, you might want to consider looking at the local construction management companies, and check out industry publications at the local library for RFPs to see who is going to be building, to identify future opportunities. The Puget Sound Business Journal has industry news. Seattle Magazine and WorkSource are also great resources.

Start making your industry connections and doing your research, and you will be that much closer to moving to the Emerald City.

I know it is difficult to move to a new state, I have certainly been there myself. I may not be able to help you find a new job in property management, but I can help you in finding the right home. I am renting from a property management company who have always had great service and fantastic properties. You can check them out at http://ballardrealtyinc.com
