Public relations specialists build positive relationships for clients
Outlook: Employment of public relations specialists is expected to increase 24 percent over the 2008-18 decade, much faster than the average for all occupations.
Pay: The 3,460 public relations specialists in the Seattle-Bellevue-Tacoma area earned a median wage of $57,710 in 2008.
The job: Public relations specialists help clients build and maintain positive relationships with the public. They write press releases and contact people in the media who might print or broadcast their material. They also arrange contact between organization representatives and the public, which can include speech writing and preparing materials for presentations. The field requires people with outgoing personalities who can communicate clearly and simply.
Training/licensing: A bachelor’s degree in public relations, journalism, marketing or communications can lead to an entry-level job. Accreditation is available for those who have at least five years of experience.
