What do you do? I am the executive director of the Seattle Sports Commission. Our job is to make the Seattle metropolitan area a world-class sports destination. We advocate for local sports, create economic impact, deliver a better quality of life and enhance Seattle’s reputation nationally and internationally.

What's a typical day like? There really isn’t a typical day, which keeps things interesting. My focus can be on things such as hosting the 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials for diving, bringing in an NCAA championship or issues surrounding childhood obesity. We work on fundraising, brainstorming the next big opportunity or preparing a bid for a major event. Every day is different, but rarely dull.

How does someone get a job like yours? It begins with a passion for sports business, events and a vision for how it can have a positive impact on the region. This position combines knowledge of sports, events, venues and franchises with an understanding of how to operate a nonprofit organization. Finally, I think a commitment to a career in sports and of course, a little luck.

What's the best part of the job? The opportunity to represent a great product (Seattle), work with an influential board of directors and the support of a very talented staff. This region is one of the most unique sports destinations in the country. I am very fortunate to have a great team at the SSC in a community where sports are an important part of the culture.

What surprises people about your job? Many people think that those in the sports industry spend a lot of time watching sports, playing golf and experiencing everything Seattle has to offer. In reality, more than meets the eye goes into a sporting event or working on a special project. The people who put on golf tournaments end up playing a lot less golf.
