Skilled court reporters earn a good salary and enjoy a range of career options

Outlook: Employment of court reporters is expected to increase 25 percent over the 2006-16 decade, much faster than the average for all occupations.

Pay: Court reporters in the Seattle-Bellevue-Tacoma area earned a median wage of $74,790 in 2008.

The job: Court reporters create verbatim transcripts of speeches, conversations, legal proceedings, meetings and other events. They are responsible for ensuring a complete, accurate and secure legal record. Increasingly, court reporters also provide closed-captioning and real-time translating services to the deaf and hard-of-hearing community.

Training/licensing: Training is offered by about 130 post-secondary vocational and technical schools and colleges. The amount of training required to become a court reporter varies with the type of reporting chosen. For example, it usually takes less than a year to become a novice voice writer, but it takes at least two years to become proficient at real-time voice writing.
