Urban and regional planners help shape land-use plans for our communities
Outlook: Employment of urban and regional planners is expected to increase 19 percent over the 2008-18 decade, faster than the average for all occupations.
Pay: The 1,660 urban and regional planners in the Seattle-Bellevue-Tacoma area earned a median wage of $69,680 in 2008.
The job: Urban and regional planners develop long- and short-term land-use plans for the region in which they are located. They help local officials alleviate social, economic and environmental problems by recommending locations for roads, schools and other infrastructure and suggesting zoning regulations for private property.
Training/licensing: Most entry-level jobs require a master’s degree from an accredited program in urban or regional planning or a related field, such as urban design or geography.
