Veterinary technologists assist licensed veterinarians with clinical work
Outlook: Employment of veterinary technologists is expected to increase 36 percent over the 2008-18 decade, much faster than the average for all occupations.
Pay: The 660 veterinary technologists in the Seattle-Bellevue-Tacoma area earned a median wage of $31,900 in 2008.
The job: Workers typically conduct clinical work under the supervision of a licensed veterinarian in a private practice, animal hospital or research facility. They may perform laboratory tests such as urinalysis and blood counts, assist with dental care, prepare tissue samples, take blood samples, administer medication and more. Lifting, holding and restraining animals increase the risk of injury on the job.
Training/licensing: Two-year and four-year veterinary technology programs in schools with American Veterinary Medical Association accreditation prepare students for a state exam for licensing.
