Pay: The average salary of a biologist (with a bachelor's or master's degree) in the Seattle area is $60,100 a year, according to PayScale, a Seattle company that tracks compensation and benefits.
Need to know: There is demand for biological scientists specializing in botany, zoology and marine biology, but opportunities will be limited because of the small size of these fields, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. New industrial applications of biotechnology, such as changing how companies make ethanol for transportation fuel, will spur demand for biological scientists.
