What This Job Pays: chef, head cook
Pay: The median pay for chefs and head cooks is about $15 an hour, with most making from about $9 an hour to about $27 an hour, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Demand: Job openings for chefs and cooks are expected to be plentiful in the coming years, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Competition should be keen for jobs in the top kitchens of higher-end restaurants. While job growth will create positions, primarily because of the expansion of family-casual dining, the overwhelming majority of job openings will stem from the need to replace workers who leave this large occupational group.
