Pay: The median salary of an environmental engineer in the Seattle area is $55,119, with most making from about $46,000 to $65,000 a year, according to PayScale, a Seattle company that tracks compensation and benefits.

Need to know: Job opportunities in the engineering field are expected to be good, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Environmental engineers are involved in water-pollution and air-pollution control, recycling, waste disposal and public-health issues. Environmental engineers also conduct hazardous-waste-management studies in which they evaluate the significance of the hazard, advise on treatment and containment, and develop regulations to prevent mishaps. They design systems for treating municipal water supplies and industrial wastewater. They conduct research on the environmental impact of proposed construction projects, analyze scientific data and perform quality-control checks.
