What This Job Pays: mail carrier
Pay: The average pay of a postal-service mail carrier in the Seattle area is $20.09 an hour, with most making from $17.49 to $22.67 an hour, according to PayScale, a Seattle company that tracks compensation and benefits.
Demand: A small decline in employment is expected in the coming years. Competition from alternative delivery systems and the increasing use of electronic communication are expected to influence the demand for mail carriers. In addition, the U.S. Postal Service is moving toward more centralized mail delivery, such as the use of cluster boxes, to cut down on the number of door-to-door deliveries.
Need to know: Qualification is based on an examination. Applicants customarily wait one to two years or more after passing the examination before being hired.
