Salary: The median annual pay for writers and authors was $44,350 in 2004, the most recent figures available. Most made from about $23,000 to more than $91,000. The median pay was $37,010 for writers working for newspaper, periodical, book, and directory publishers. Median pay for editors was $43,890, while most made from about $26,000 to more than $80,000. The median annual pay of editors working for newspaper, periodical, book, and directory publishers was $43,620.

Demand: Employment of writers and editors is expected to grow about as fast as the average for all occupations through 2014. The outlook for most writing and editing jobs is expected to be competitive because many people with writing or journalism training are attracted to the occupation.

Need to know: Most jobs require a college degree in communications, journalism or English, although a degree in a technical subject may be useful for technical-writing positions. Online publications and services are growing in number and sophistication, spurring the demand for writers and editors, especially those with Web experience.
