Where to get a resume review
Q: I am employed at a Seattle-area technology firm. I have a solid résumé and have worked for the last nine years as a procurement professional. I am thinking about looking for other opportunities in the area, and I would like a résumé review and some help locating jobs that would be a good fit for me. Would you be able to provide some referrals?

Kristen says: To start with, I would recommend going to your local WorkSource office. It can provide a free résumé review and can help you find published opportunities when you are ready.
You might want to join NFJS (Notes From the Job Search), a group that meets weekly to go over various parts of the job-seeking process, including résumés, interviewing, networking and other key subjects. The group is cyclical, so you can drop in at any point.
You can get feedback from your LinkedIn contacts after importing your résumé to your profile. In the Answers section (under the “More” link at top right), click on “Career and Education” under the “Browse” tab. Go to “Résumé Writing,” and click on “Ask a question about Résumé Writing.” Be sure to make good use of keywords, a topic I covered in a previous column).
To look for new opportunities, your best bet is going to be networking. I would start by identifying the companies you are interested in and then using LinkedIn to contact hiring managers, recruiters, and current and former co-workers at your targeted companies. If you interact with vendors or other service providers, those are also great resources.
Local networking groups include Linked:Seattle, Seattle Job Social and Eastside Networking Event. For industry-specific groups, I would first look for those associated with national professional associations, such as the American Purchasing Society. When seeking out potential hiring managers or industry contacts, try searching for certifications by using keywords (for example, CPP or Certified Purchasing Professional). These groups’ websites generally have job boards as well.
