This year's holiday present for your boss? The book "Why Work Sucks and How to Fix It"
NWjobs
You may have heard of Cali Ressler and Jody Thompson when BusinessWeek did a cover story late in 2006 on Best Buy's meeting-free, schedule-less workplace policies. Ressler and Thompson were the forward-thinking HR pros who spearheaded Best Buy's uber-flexible workplace experiment, the "Results-Only Work Environment," or ROWE.
ROWE has been a huge success at Best Buy. The company's office employees work when and where they want, and meetings are optional. (Seriously.) Employees are happy. The company saves money (less turnover, less need for desk space). Even the managers who initially dug in their heels now sing the program's praises.
Ressler and Thompson lay out the blueprints they used to transform Best Buy into the corporate poster child for flexibility in their new book, Why Work Sucks and How to Fix It. If you want to learn more about how ROWE works and how you can introduce even a small piece of it at your company (even if you're just someone's underling), check out the free download of the book's introduction and first chapter on their website. Or download a free podcast to listen to on your drive to work.
