Job search workshops, webinars and networking events

NWjobs

As we move into the longer days of late May, the job-search world is heating up (even if the weather isn't exactly cooperating yet). In the next week, there are three not-to-be missed events for employment seekers--a workshop, a networking event and a free "webinar," packed with job-hunting tips:

Saturday, May 16: IT Talent Workshop - The Puget Sound chapter of the Association for Women in Computing (AWC) will host this all-day seminar from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Museum of Flight at Boeing Field. While the association is aimed mostly at women professionals, men are also encouraged to attend.

The main topics will be the global economy's impact on the local IT job market, the long-term affects of globalization (i.e., outsourcing and off-shoring), the benefits of independent consulting and the hot job prospects for the Puget Sound region's IT community. Some of the featured speakers will include Desiree Phair, regional labor economist for the Employment Security Department; Jennifer Shettleroe, vice president of global product development and technical support at Attachmate; Teena Christel, CEO and founder of MySource Talent; and Fiona Walsh, business coach at Ghost CEO.

The $80 registration fee ($65 for AWC members) includes admission to the museum. The first 50 attendees will also receive a Swivel Series USB Drive.

Tuesday, May 19: Seattle Job Social - After the smashing success of last month's Seattle Job Social at Bellevue's The Parlor, the organizers of the region's latest networking sensation are moving back within city limits to Twist Restaurant and Lounge in Belltown. Beginning at 6 p.m., this will be the fourth Job Social event that the organization has held. Representatives from more than 30 Puget Sound-area firms are scheduled to attend and will be accepting résumés. Come prepared to chat with them about your job skills in a relaxed, informal atmosphere.

This month, the sponsor will be Vertical Move, a Kirkland-based recruiting firm, specializing in the software arena. There will be a $5 charge at the door to cover basic costs.

Thursday, May 21: How to Win in a Competitive Job Market - Presented through the IEEE technology association, this webinar, beginning at 10 a.m., will provide tips for those people looking to make a career change, re-enter the job market after an extended absence or search for a job after a layoff. Employment specialist Sherri Edwards, principal of the Resource Maximizer consulting business, will lead the discussion and show you what it takes to give yourself a leg up in this extremely tight job market.

Topics at the webinar will include the basic premises about the job market, key elements of an effective job search and easy, confidence-building behaviors you can adopt to ensure success. Through her advice, Edwards will show participants how some successful people can create their own "luck" through preparation and effort. For details about registration for the free webinar event, visit IEEE USA's Career Navigator page.

As always, to find more information on other local networking events around the Sound, be sure to check in at the NWJobs events calendar.

I like Edwards' comment on creating luck. Many people have defined luck as when opportunity intersects with preparation. She is absolutely right, we can create our own luck.

One more event to add to your list, Randy, is our job search workshop. We are getting great reviews and people are finding it more informative and packed with useful information than they expected.

We also address the anxiety people face looking for work. I wrote a book on managing anxiety so we have the tools to help.

Our event is the third one and it is building. We are committed to doing these the first of every month. The next one is June 3, 2009 at the Best Western Emerald Suites at I-5 and 320th in Federal Way, WA.

How To Make money with affiliate programs Today. Affiliate marketing is the easier and probably the most effective method to make money from the internet. It is basically, a kind of selling technique where potential buyers from your website are directed to the websites of sellers. For every click, the website owner gets a small commission.
