Events to accelerate your job search

NWjobs

Another gorgeous weekend is almost upon us in Seattle. Although the sunny skies may be tempting, it's important for job seekers to stay focused on their goals. Next week, there is a week-long lineup of events (at a wide range of prices) to help keep you moving on the path toward fulfilling employment. Here are some of the ones that stood out for me:

Monday, July 13:
Let Your Job Search Take Flight -- This workshop, presented by WorkSource, will provide tactical strategies for setting career goals and managing your time. Learn tips about writing targeted resumes and gathering information on companies before going to job interviews. For more information, go to the WorkSource Aerospace Center or call 425.640.1887. Time: 1:30-3 p.m. Location: Edmonds Community College, North Campus. Admission: Free, but participants must have a working e-mail address and submit a profile at go2worksource.com. Also, bring along a resume, a cover letter and a thumb drive or disk.

Wednesday, July 15:
Resume and Cover Letter Writing -- This two-week, online clinic from Media Bistro offers advice on creating effective resumes, cover letters and thank-you notes. After receiving weekly lectures by instructors, participants can post completed assignments and receive feedback from the instructor and fellow students via instant message. To sign up, submit a letter of interest and work history to mediabistro.com; seating limited to 12 participants. Time: Flexible, from July 15 to July 29. Location: Online. Admission: $250 ($225 for AvantGuild members).

Career Search Seminar -- This three-hour seminar--sponsored by Woodland Recruiting, Career Horizons and the Puget Sound Business Journal--covers effective resume writing, the generation of job leads and more. All attendees will receive a one-year subscription to the Puget Sound Business Journal and the "2009 Book of Lists." For more information, visit the Woodland Recruiting Web site. Time: 9 a.m.-noon. Location: Union Bank, 10900 N.E. Eighth St., 2nd Floor, Bellevue. Admission: $75.

Thursday, July 16:
eWomenNetwork's Accelerated Networking Luncheon -- Learn about ways to conquer your fears of public speaking with advice from presenter Pamela Ziemann, owner of the Online Speaking School. Find out how to attract new business by speaking in a radically new way. For more information on this regular series of business luncheons for women professionals, contact the eWomenNetwork Web site. Time: 10:45 a.m.-1:45 p.m. Location: Maggiano's Little Italy, 10455 NE Eighth St., Bellevue. Admission: $55; $65 starting 7/13; $42 for members.

Friday, July 17
The Toast of Seattle -- Join other job seekers and company representatives at the Greater Seattle Chamber of Commerce's networking breakfast, hosted by Apulent Events and Catering. Three structured networking rounds will help you expand your contacts while you admire the superb views of the Shilshole waterfront. To register, go to the chamber's Web site or contact Larry Pike at 206.389.7215. Time: 7:30-9:30 a.m. Location: Shilshole Bay Beach Club, 6413 Seaview Ave. NW, Seattle. Admission: $15 pre-paid ($20 after 7/15). The event is for chamber members only, but first-time "try us out" participants will be allowed.
